WIth the official celebration of LSU football over and basketball not being much to celebrate right now (losing to an Ole Miss team that shot less than 40% from the floor???), I figure its time for Mardi Gras music.
I also guess an update of sorts is due.
Work is work. Its still going.
Went to the Re-Elect Mayor Bobby Simpson Campaign Kickoff errrrrr Parade of Champions yesterday for LSU and Southern. It was a great thing for Baton Rouge. LSU and Southern fans partied in the streets together and then were getting down in the rain at the State Capitol to Southern's band playing Do What You Wanna (a Mardi Gras staple) and LSU's Hey Baby before both bands played the national anthem together. After the ceremony, as we were walking back the last song we heard was Southern's band playing We Are the Champions, a song the Golden Band should get in their repertoire.
Back in Tiger Stadium that afternoon, it was still rainy but no one cared. They had a stage set up in the south endzone for the festivities. The field had a fresh coat of paint including an awesome national championship logo below the Eye of the Tiger. Mitch Landrieu "took one for the team" by appearing in Kathleen Blanco's place (she was at a wedding out of state) and taking the boos for her (take a guess who the vast majority of LSU fans were voting for), second to the only other boos of the day, which were for the AP representative there to present Nick Saban with the AP Coach of the year honors. Her comments, which no one could hear due to the booing were "at least we made the right choice for Coach of the Year". From what I saw, she was smiling through the jeers and was expecting it. They replayed the "Dream On" music video from before the Sugar Bowl and then a brand new "Eye of the Tiger" video of Sugar Bowl highlights before the focus of the day as the 2003 National Champions flag was hoisted as a nice wind came through for its unfurling.
Great (paraphrased) lines from the day:
Chancellor Emmert at the Capitol: "I know one thing, they're not having a party like this in Southern California today" to which all the Southern players got up and gave LSU a standing ovation.
Mayor Bobby Simpson: "You know Michigan and Tennessee might boast having over 100,000 in their stadiums, but no city but Baton Rouge, LA can claim to have more than 125,000 fans sitting in stadiums on a given Saturday to watch college football."
In other developments, I decided to buy the South Beach Diet book on Friday and read it today. I plan on starting tomorrow, so wish me luck. The hardest part will probably be getting in the habit of making breakfast in the morning, but hopefully the egg and ham/turkey bacon breakfasts (which are encouraged) will help with that. For those of you that haven't heard of it, I think the best way to describe it is as a heart-friendly alternative to Atkins. Like Atkins, it gets you off of breads, pastas and fruits (at least to start), but does not encourage you to eat all the carbs you want. It was developed by a cardiologist, so I will consider it a little less likely to give me a heart attack than the eat all the red meat you want Atkins diet.
In related news, I'm considering getting an X-Flex Gym to flesh out this whole healthy thing. If anyone reading knows more about these home gyms, feedback would be appreciated.
Everyone is happy that Benoit won the Royal Rumble. All it means is that he gets to job to HHH at WrestleMania.
Just read that Endymion is doing an LSU Superfloat this year and that's not even the big news.
The big news is that it looks like the Golden Band from Tigerland is marching in Rex! After last year I didn't think I'd go Uptown for Mardi Gras Day again, but if this is true, I just changed my mind!

Found this on the Tiger's Lair. Its hilarious.
FROM THE SPORTSWIRE, AP SPORTSWRITERS HAVE DECIDED THAT THEY CONTINUE TO BE SMARTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE AND HAVE ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT THEY HAVE VOTED THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES AS THE AP NFL CHAMPION FOR THIS YEAR.
AP SPORTSWRITER, JOHN "WATERBOY" SMITH, SAID, "I DON'T CARE WHAT THE RULES SAY. THE SUPERBOWL IS IRRELEVENT. WE ALL KNOW THAT THE EAGLES ARE THE BEST TEAM. WE AREN'T GONNA LET SOME BRAINLESS PLAYOFF SYSTEM TAKE THE PLACE OF HUMAN BEINGS."
THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA IS NOW EUPHORIC.
LONG TIME EAGLES' FAN, JIM KYRSHRINSKI, "WE ARE THE PEOPLE'S CHAMPION"! YELLED AS HE BURNING A 1984 CRYSLER.
"THE EAGLES PROVED THEY WERE THE BEST TEAM ON THE FIELD. THEY ARE THE GREATEST....CAUSE WE SAY SO AND WE ARE SMARTER THAN ANYONE ELSE. WE KNOW IT. THEY KNOW IT CAUSE WE SAY SO" SAYS AP WRITER, WILLIAM T. JOHNSON IV AKA THE GEEK/NERD.
MAYOR STREET HAS ANNOUNCED A PARADE AND FOR THE AP TROPHY PRESENTATION. "JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED" SAID MAYOR STREET.
CBS ANCHOR, JIM NANCE, SAID "I DON'T KNOW WHY ANY ONE NEED TO WATCH THE SUPERBOWL ON CBS IN 2 WEEKS. IT IS A MEANINGLESS GAME. WE DON'T NEED TO WATCH IT CAUSE THE EAGLES HAVE PROVEN THEY ARE THE BEST TEAM. THE PANTHERS AND PATRIOTS WILL BE RECOGNIZED ONLY AS THE NFL PLAYOFF SYSTEM CHAMPIONS DUE TO THE SPLIT".
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, THE GUTLESS PROFIT VULTURES, HAVE PROUDLY ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL PUT OUT 2 SPECIAL EDITION MAGAZINES. ONE FOR THE AP CHAMPION EAGLES AND THE OTHER FOR THE NFL PLAYOFF SYSTEM CHAMPION.

Wow, I actually care about the Superbowl this year.
Panthers vs. Patriots and I actualy want both teams to win.
On one hand, if the Panthers win, Jake Delholme completes his embarassment of the Saints. On the other, if the Patriots win, Rohan Davey, Jarvis Green and Kevin Faulk all get Superbowl rings.
Its too hard to choose which will be more fun. I almost want the Pats in a blowout so that Rohan Davey actually gets a snap or two in the Superbowl (hey, I can dream).
This should be a really good Superbowl. Any word on good commercials yet?

Well, just like Star Trek had to make Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country as an apology to moviegoers for Star Trek V, he comes Rocky VI! Check out the trailer here, this movie might be the best of them all!
USC gets the New York Times Computer and AP, LSU gets the Coaches and 7 other computers. LSU's computer average is 1 after the BCS throws out the lowest computer ranking (2nd in NYT) and USC's is 1.83.
That's all I have to say about the Sugar Bowl right now. I'm too tired to write it all. However, I know that everyone reading has one question on their mind right now.
Question: Now that LSU has won a national championship is Sean going to be as insufferable as we think he'll be?
I'm going to go with my friend Pete, who I caught up with at my 5 year reunion over the break. He got his undergrad at Amherst and is at Yale Medical now, so he represents the smartest person I know. His prediction:
LSU 14 Oklahoma 10.
There you go.
I will say this. I have never EVER seen Nick Saban smile as much as he has this week. He actually busted out a James Brown boogie the other night that they showed on Inside LSU Football tonight. If Nick Saban is this comfortable and loose, he's GOT to know something about how this game is going to play out.
PS: whether LSU wins or loses, USC, Pete Carroll, ABC, ESPN and the entire national sports media can go to hell. The BCS may be flawed, but it is the system in place. Al Gore couldn't skip around the Electoral College to win the Presidency in 2000 and USC can't skip around the BCS system to win the National Championships. The rules were agreed upon by all to start with and if it doesn't work your way, tough shit! Everyone knows that if LSU had been shut out and beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl, the national media wouldn't be in an uproar. Louisiana isn't as big as a media market as the other LA. USC, Enjoy the Rose Bowl trophy and certificate the AP will send you, either LSU or OU will have a big Crystal football that says National Champions on it.
